Rock Salt: Doesn’t Begin and end with Pink

Rock Salt: Doesn’t Begin and end with Pink

Promoted as “healthy salt” and a pretty shade of pink to boot; Himalayan Rock Salt (also known as Pink Himalayan Salt/Pink Salt/Himalayan Sea Salt/Rock Salt/Himalayan Crystal Salt) has captured the market’s imagination, appealing to gourmands and the wellness set alike.

Why?

Many have made the switch to pink salt due to its reputation for being a healthier alternative to “chemically cleaned” table salt; with nutritional benefits from naturally occurring and “pure”, trace minerals such as magnesium, iron and calcium.

It is said consuming these elements in their mineral form can help regulate water content in the body, promote healthy pH balance, blood sugar health, vascular health, aid digestion and prevent muscle cramps (to name a few).

This salt’s therapeutic benefits have been so well-packaged (and over-inflated in some cases) that it has also found a place in a broad selection of on-trend products and applications: from home to personal care.

You can cook on it (tempered Himalayan rock salt cooking block infuses food with the ‘perfect’ amount of seasoning); decorate your home with it (salt lamps, furniture, kitchen décor, walls etc); bathe in it (“brine baths”) and put it all over your body (scrubs, face masks etc). It seems it pays to be pretty in pink!

Clever marketing aside; rock salt doesn’t begin and end with the pink variety!

There is a rock salt with therapeutic properties that far exceeds that of its popular pink cousin; and has a rich tradition and history of use behind it.

Romanian rock salt

With 300 salt mountains and 200 salt masses on both sides of the Carpathian Mountains, and over 3,000 salt lakes and springs, Romania is rich with salt and been at the forefront of Europe’s salt mining industry since antiquity.

Further, the special, therapeutic quality of Romanian salt and optimal conditions for extraction (topographical and climate conditions make the process efficient and safe), means Romania is one of the best countries in the world for mining this precious commodity.

Who knew?!

Prahova Salt Mine in Slanic Prahova is the largest salt mine in Europe; with historical documents suggesting the first excavations occurred around 1685, concluding in 1972.

While the mine is no longer active today, it is open for industrial purposes and to the public for medical tourism, with travelers coming from all over the world every year to visit its salt rooms and health spa.

Salin Plus only sources salt for our filter cartridges from Slanic Prahova. But what makes it so special and so different to Himalayan?

The key point of difference between the two (aside from color: Romanian is not as pretty in white, yellow or brown-hues), is crystal structure and how this informs the salt’s performance in aerosol form.

Himalayan rock salt can be dispersed as dry aerosol; but nowhere near as efficiently as Romanian rock salt.

Records of this salt’s outstanding therapeutic performance for respiratory illness predate anything available on Himalayan rock salt. In crystalized form, Romanian rock salt can be dispersed through the air in particles sub five microns, a scale unheard of with any other rock salt variety.

As a result, dry salt ions, rich with trace minerals calcium chloride, magnesium and iodine (similar but different in composition to pink salt) can be inhaled deep into the lungs to do their work.

This is why people travel to Romania’s naturally occurring salt caves and health spas!  Romanian salt is unrivaled in its therapeutic quality!

The Salin Plus Salt Therapy device replicates this microclimate using Romanian rock salt that has been purified and crystallized in the laboratory over a one month period.

In 2002, the Salin Plus Salt Therapy device won the Gold Medal at the 51st World Exhibition for Innovation, Research and New Technology in Brussels, Belgium for this innovative way of preparing the salt and delivering microscopic salt particles deep into the upper and lower respiratory tract. The product has since been regarded as an effective and convenient alternative to traditional saline sprays and steam-based devices.

Romanian rock salt: the world’s most ancient, healing salt; and no longer Europe’s best kept secret!
